Abstract
This publication, A Handbook on Military Taxes & Conscience, is intended to be both a comprehensive resource for study of the military tax concern, and also a source of information for those who are considering or practicing military tax resistance. The first five chapters explore the history and background of the concern over military taxes. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the history of legislative action on the issue and the relationship of the U.S. tax code to possible actions an individual might take. Chapter 8, 'Spiritual Leadings and Rational Decisions,' is a thoughtful treatment of how one discerns a conscientious leading, while Chapter 9 shares the stories of individuals who have been led to take some action in response to the promptings of their consciences. A list of resources has been provided for those who wish to explore the issue in greater depth, along with study questions which we hope you will use in your own search, as well as in group discussions. Contents include: We Friends Here Assembled, What Does the Bible Say?, A Quaker History, What the Churches Say, The International Response, The Search for Legislative Accommodation, Options & Consequences, Spiritual Leadings & Rational Decisions, Honoring God or Paying Caesar, Appendix A (Questions for Study & Discussion), Appendix B (The Peace Tax Fund Bill in Plain English), Appendix C (Commonly Asked Questions).
